What is a bare root tree?
A bare root tree is a dormant tree that has been dug up from the ground and sold without any soil or compost around its roots. Nurseries dig up bare root trees in early spring or late fall when the trees are dormant and don’t have leaves, flowers, or fruit.
Here are some things to know about bare root trees:
When to plant
Bare root trees need to be planted soon after you receive them because they can’t stay dormant for long. If the buds start to open, it’s a sign that the tree is emerging from dormancy and needs to be planted.
How to plant
Before planting, soak the roots in water for 2–12 hours. Dig a hole that’s wider than the roots and plant the tree at the same depth it was in the nursery. Fill the hole with soil, packing it lightly so there are no air pockets around the roots. Water the tree well after planting.
Benefits
Bare root trees can take off faster than potted trees and cost 50–70% less.
Disadvantages
Bare root trees are only available for a limited time and have a short planting window.
